A merry heart-no background

meet the herbalist

Hi, I’m Mary Johnson. From spring to autumn, my garden is one of my favourite places to be. Surrounded by plants, I find calm and inspiration, whether I’m planting new ones for remedies or harvesting fragrant sprigs for a meal. There's something special about using herbs straight from the garden — a simple pleasure I try never to take for granted.

Herbs and gardening are more than hobbies; they shape the way I live. I spend time learning about plants, collecting seeds, and thinking of new ways to bring their benefits into daily life. My husband is a good sport, listening to my endless herb stories, even though I know they're not his cup of tea. :)

Most importantly, my faith is at the heart of who I am. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I try to let His love and guidance shape everything I do.

about

Be Merry Apothecary is a home-based business born from my enthusiasm for holistic healing. After a discouraging experience with conventional healthcare, I discovered the profound benefits of traditional herbal medicine and desire to help others find natural, compassionate support.

Trained as a Community Herbalist through Pacific Rim College Online in Victoria, B.C., I now create remedies with high-quality ingredients that support each person’s unique story and needs. My mission with Be Merry Apothecary is to offer a gentle yet effective alternative to the impersonal, synthetic approaches of modern medicine — fostering healing through care, connection, and the natural gifts of plants.

Many of the herbs I use come straight from my own garden, where I grow and tend them with the same care I put into every remedy.

“A merry heart does good like a medicine.” (Proverbs 17:22)

Be Merry Apothecary was founded on this timeless truth: that joy and wellness are deeply connected. My desire is to nurture that connection — through the restorative power of plants, heartfelt care, and the gentle art of pausing to listen to nature and one another within God's beautiful creation.

faq

At Be Merry Apothecary, I want you to feel comfortable, supported, and confident in your wellness journey. Below are answers to some common questions, and at the end of the list is some important information that you'll want to read.

General Questions

What is an apothecary?

  • An apothecary is a place where natural remedies are crafted using herbs and other botanicals to support health and well-being.

How is herbal medicine different from conventional medicine?

  • Herbal medicine works with the body’s natural rhythms and focuses on supporting long-term balance and healing. Conventional medicine often targets symptoms with synthetic drugs, while herbal remedies take a gentler, holistic approach.

Do you offer consultations?

  • Yes! I provide one-on-one health consultations to understand your unique needs and create personalized herbal remedies.

Products & Remedies

How are your herbal products made?

  • Each product is carefully prepared in small batches using high-quality herbs. Custom formulas are blended specifically for each client after a consultation.

What kinds of remedies do you offer?

  • Depending on your needs, I may recommend tinctures, teas, capsules, salves, or other herbal preparations.

How long does it take to receive a custom remedy?

  • If the formula is in stock, it can be picked up or mailed right away. If it needs to be made from scratch, please allow up to 4 weeks, depending on the formula.

How will I know how to take my herbal remedy?

  • Clear instructions for use and dosage are always provided with your remedy.

Safety & Effectiveness

Are herbal remedies safe?

  • Yes — when chosen and used properly. I carefully select herbs that are safe, effective, and appropriate for your health needs.

Can I take herbal remedies with my prescription medications?

  • It depends on the medicine and the formula. This is why consultations are so important — I review your health history to ensure safety and compatibility.

Do herbal remedies work right away?

  • Some herbs act quickly, while others work gently over time to restore balance. Your formula may include both fast-acting and long-term support herbs.

Orders & Return Policies

How do I place an order?

  • Orders are placed after a consultation, or you may send an email to inquire about products in stock in the apothecary.

What payment types do you accept?

Do you ship outside the Comox Valley?

  • Yes, I mail orders to clients who are not local to Comox. The amount for postage will be added to your bill.

What is your refund policy?

  • Because every body responds differently to herbs, I cannot offer refunds on products once consumed. If you are not satisfied with your custom remedy, please contact me within 30 days with your concerns and I'll see how I can help — I want you to feel supported and cared for.

PLEASE NOTE:

Mary Johnson is not a medical doctor. In British Columbia, herbalists are not licensed health practitioners. This means Mary does not diagnose, prescribe, or claim to treat or cure illnesses. Instead, her role is to share knowledge and support your journey with natural wellness. Consultations are meant to offer guidance and support, and are designed to complement — not replace — professional medical care.

For any health concerns, it’s important to see your family doctor or healthcare provider for diagnosis and medical guidance. Mary’s work is meant to walk alongside, never instead of, your medical care.

Before your consultation, you’ll be asked to acknowledge that you are responsible for seeking the advice of your doctor or specialist about your health condition.
